The struggle with the cure To get ink to dry instantly while a substrate is flying past at top speed, you need a very specific mix of gases to hit those UVC and UVB wavelengths. It’s a balancing act. If your wattage is too low, you end up with “tacky” prints that smudge and ruin the job. But if your voltage isn’t steady? The arc starts to wander. Quartz and the heat trade-off We use high-purity fused quartz for the bulb envelope because standard glass basically blocks the UV rays we’re trying to use. Plus, quartz can handle the rapid temperature swings without just snapping. We’ve found that making the walls a bit thicker helps the bulb take a beating in rugged shops. The catch? It lets a little less UV light through. It’s a trade-off. Depending on how fast your line is moving, you have to decide if you want a bulb that’s “stronger” or one that’s “brighter.” Real-world installation Getting these into your line is where a lot of people trip up. If your reflectors are even slightly off, you’re wasting about 30% of your energy as raw heat instead of pointing it at the ink. And please, check your fans. A 1000W bulb puts out a massive amount of infrared energy. If your cooling isn’t up to the task, the quartz will actually soften, and your bulb will burn out way before it should.
