
Getting the 120W/cm Mercury UV Lamp Right
We set our standard mercury UV lamps at 120W/cm for a reason. Most industrial curing and sterilization lines rely on this as their baseline. It’s the “sweet spot.” You get plenty of UVC output, but you aren’t pushing the quartz envelope so hard that the glass stresses or the electrodes just give up.
The actual physics of it
At 120W/cm, you’re dealing with a very concentrated stream of shortwave radiation. To make sure that light actually gets out, we use high-purity fused quartz. Here’s the thing: if your wattage is too low, your curing takes forever. But if you crank it too high? You’re looking at a fried ballast or a lamp that dies way sooner than it should. Just make sure your cooling fans can handle the heat. If they can’t, the lamp’s temperature will drift, and you’ll lose that optimal performance.
Why CE certification actually matters
Some folks think CE certification is just a checkbox or a fancy stamp. In the UV world, it’s more like a passport. You can’t even get into the European market without it. But beyond the paperwork, it’s about safety. For a 120W/cm lamp, we put it through the ringer—testing for electromagnetic interference and dielectric strength. It’s the difference between a lamp that works and one that trips your circuit breaker or messes with the other gear on your production line. If you’re shipping to high-end European OEMs, they aren’t going to take a gamble on non-certified gear.
Putting them to work
These lamps are designed to be simple drop-in replacements. You swap them out, plug them in, and get back to work. But here is a pro tip: the life of your lamp—whether it lasts 1,000 hours or 5,000—mostly depends on how stable your power supply is. We’ve seen plenty of cheap, non-certified lamps flicker or just pop the second there’s a voltage spike. CE-compliant units are just tougher. They handle those fluctuations without breaking a sweat. For the engineers who have to calculate exact curing times as a conveyor moves, that predictability is everything.
