
Getting the Most Out of Your 120W/cm Mercury UV Lamps
Let’s be honest: mercury vapor lamps are the old reliable of the printing world. They just work. When you’re running a 120W/cm setup, you’ve got a specific kind of power designed to snap those inks and coatings into place without accidentally frying your materials. The balance between speed and heat That 120W/cm number isn’t just a spec on a sheet—it’s what tells you how fast you can actually push your conveyor belt. Crank up the wattage, and you get more UV photons hitting the ink, which means the cross-linking happens faster. You get your product out the door sooner. But there’s a catch. All that power brings a lot of infrared heat. If your cooling fans are weak or your water jackets aren’t up to the task, you’re going to have a bad time. We’ve seen it happen: PET warping or paper curling because the heat got out of hand. It’s a delicate balance. Why mercury? We stick with mercury vapor because it hits a broad spectrum. It peaks at 254nm and 365nm, which is a fancy way of saying it cures the surface and the deep layers at the same time. The quartz glass holding it all together is the real hero here. It has to handle insane internal pressure and heat to keep the mercury in a gas state. The best part? These are designed to slide right into your existing industrial ballasts without a fuss. Setting it up (and keeping it running) Wiring these isn’t something you want to wing. If the ballast doesn’t match, you’ll burn through your lamps way too fast. And then there’s the distance. This is where most people mess up. If the lamp is too close, you’ll scorch the ink. Too far? You’ll end up with “tacky” spots that never truly dry.
