
Getting Your Textile Curing Right with Gallium Iodide UV Lamps
If you’ve ever dealt with ink that looks dry on top but stays gooey underneath, you know exactly why we do what we do. We build custom gallium iodide (GaI) lamps specifically for the textile world, because standard mercury lamps just don’t always cut it when you’re dealing with thick fabrics. Here’s the deal: gallium iodide shifts the light to a longer wavelength. In plain English? The UV energy actually sinks deep into the fabric and the ink, rather than just bouncing off the surface. No more “surface curing.” We’ve all seen it—the top layer hardens, but the base stays wet. That’s a recipe for smudging or peeling the second the fabric hits the conveyor. By targeting that 300nm to 400nm range, our lamps make sure the ink bonds fully to the fiber. It’s a total cure, all the way through. But, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. These lamps gethot. Really hot. Since we build them to your specific machine size and wattage, we use high-purity quartz glass so the tubes don’t crack under the pressure. But you’ve got to do your part—make sure your exhaust system can actually move that heat. If your cooling is weak, your lamps will burn out way faster than they should. As for getting them into your setup, we try to make it as painless as possible. They’re designed to drop right into your existing UV arrays. We offer different end-cap options, too, so you aren’t spending all day messing with the wiring. One heads-up: check your ballasts. GaI lamps start up differently than mercury ones. If the power supply isn’t a match, you’ll either get no arc at all or you’ll fry the electrode. At the end of the day, we’re chasing stability. You want every single meter of fabric to come out looking identical. When the UV intensity is steady, you can stop fiddling with manual adjustments and just let the machine run.
